Guru Gobind Singh's Birthday The life of Guru Gobind Singh
Guru Gobind Singh was born in 1666. He became guru at the age of nine after the death of his father, Guru Tegh Bahadur. Guru Gobind Singh was a brilliant scholar and a brave warrior, and he had a kind and generous nature. He had to fight many battles to protect the Sikhs and their religious freedom. In 1699, at the festival of Baisakhi, he started the Khalsa, or Sikh community.

Guru Gobind Singh's birthday is marked with a gurpurb very similar to that held on Guru Nanak's birthday. In India, the festival takes place on the day itself. In other countries such as Britain, it is usually celebrated on the nearest Sunday. In Britain, the roads are sealed off so that a procession of the Panj Piare and the Guru Granth Sahib can take place. The procession passes by the local Gurudwaras, which are decorated with banners and flowers.

A Shabad by Guru Gobind Singh
" Grant me this boon
O God, from Thy greatness.
May I never refrain
From righteous acts.
May I fight without fear
All foes in life's battle,
With confident courage
Claiming the victory!
May Thy glory be
Ever in my mind,
And my highest ambition be
Singing Thy praises.
When this mortal life
Reaches its end,
May I die fighting
With limitless courage!"
